Ravens Work Out Tyree

The Ravens worked out the author of one of the most famous catches in NFL history, as former New York Giants receiver David Tyree was in Baltimore on Tuesday.

Tyree - perhaps best known for his leaping 32-yard grab to convert a critical third down for the Giants in Super Bowl XLII that set up a game-winning touchdown over the New England Patriots - worked out for Ravens officials along with a number of players, as is typical of a Tuesday during the season.

General manager Ozzie Newsome confirmed the workout but did not disclose whether or not Tyree would be signed.

The Ravens open their 2009 campaign this Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, and are currently heading into that contest with four wideouts.

Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh has said that the Ravens are always looking to upgrade their roster, but he felt comfortable with Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton, Kelley Washington and Demetrius Williams catching quarterback Joe Flacco’s passes.

That is largely due to the belief that Clayton and Williams can stay healthy after dealing with hamstring injuries and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron’s imaginative use of the entire roster.

“We can play with four, because with our offense, we can put any number of players out there that we want,” Harbaugh said. “It’s a little more difficult on defense. The team puts four wide receivers out there, or five wide receivers, you’ve got to be able to match. On offense, we can put one wide receiver out there if we want, if we need to, and we’ve got some flexibility with our players and guys we can put on the field.”

In the preseason, Mason, Washington and Williams have combined for 27 passes for 416 yards, with Clayton remaining on the sideline. Flacco has completed 65.6 percent of his throws and compiled a 94.3 quarterback rating.

Meanwhile, Tyree missed the entire 2008 season after undergoing offseason knee surgery and then dealing with a nagging hamstring injury. He also battled groin, hamstring and knee injuries in training camp this year. Tyree, 29, did not play in New York’s last two preseason games before being waived just before the deadline for the final cutdown from 75 to 53 players.

“It’s obviously a time of mixed feelings,” Tyree said last Saturday according to the Associated Press. “This is part of the journey. It’s not like it’s a great day. But at the same time I’m filled with expectations about what’s next on this track, and I’m excited, as well.”

Before Tyree helped make history by trapping that third-down pass from Eli Manning against his helmet while being blanketed by safety Rodney Harrison, Tyree earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2005 as a special teamer.

In 73 career games, Tyree owns 54 receptions for 650 yards and four touchdowns.
