Ray Lewis Misses Practice

Ray Lewis was held out of Wednesday’s practice with a foot injury he suffered last weekend in a 17-15 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

In fact, he was only one of four starters to miss the session.  Center Matt Birk (neck), safety Ed Reed (foot) and linebacker/defensive end Terrell Suggs (knee) also did not suit up, along with tight end L.J. Smith (illness).

Lewis hurt his foot early in the Colts game and said that he aggravated a pre-existing injury.  He did not want to blame an achy foot on a missed tackle on running back Joseph Addai’s touchdown run.

“It’s kind of been the foot thing that I’ve been dealing with,” Lewis said.  “The bottom line is it just got caught between two people on a freakish play.  That’s kind of always the way things happen, but I kind of came out if it OK.  The limp was obvious, and the plant was whatever. But it’s going to be what it’s going to be.  Everybody deals with injury this time of the year.  All you can do is keep nursing them and making sure that you can hopefully be 90-95 percent when Sunday does come around.”

Meanwhile, Suggs had previously hoped for a “miraculous” comeback from his knee injury by the time the Pittsburgh Steelers come to Baltimore this Sunday, but he was not on the field.  Suggs declined to speak with the media.

“He’s making progress,” head coach John Harbaugh noted.  “You just don’t know with that [type of injury]. It’s the same kind of deal that some other guys have had around the league, and everybody says the same thing.  It’s day to day, week to week.  When it starts feeling like he can run, he’ll play.

He’s getting close; we’ll just have to see.  We’re not afraid to put him out there.  It’s not like he has to practice all week to play.  If he’s ready to play Sunday, he’ll be out there playing.”

The Ravens also designated tight end Todd Heap (chest) and defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (ankle) as limited participants, while linebacker Jarret Johnson (shoulder) fully practiced.

For the Steelers, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been the hot topic lately after demonstrating concussion-like symptoms when he was hit hard against the Kansas City Chiefs last week.

Roethlisberger fully practiced on Wednesday, according to the injury report.

Defensive end Travis Kirschke (calf) was limited, and quarterback Charlie Batch (left wrist), linebacker James Farrior (no injury), guard Chris Kemoeatu (knee), safety Troy Polamalu and wideout Hines Ward (no injury) were held out.
