Mason Moves Up

With a breakout nine-catch, 142-yard performance in a 17-15 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Ravens wideout Derrick Mason recorded his sixth-career 100-yard game, making his total the second-most in team annals.

Mason is tied with Derrick Alexander, who topped the century mark six times from 1996-97.   Additionally, the 13th-year veteran is two games behind Mark Clayton (eight).

While it is clear that Mason is a favorite target of quarterback Joe Flacco, the loquacious receiver was more willing to talk about the Ravens’ inability to convert touchdowns on four trips to the red zone than his own play.

“You can’t put it on one guy,” he said.  “This is an 11-man football game, and to say we didn’t punch it in, you can’t. You have to look at the whole scope of the thing. So, we had an opportunity at the 2 [yard line], didn’t make the best of it, came out with a field goal.

“But we need to get to a point where we get tired of stuff like that and it can’t be a, ‘Well, we’ll get it next time.’ No. Next time is coming to an end pretty soon, and we need to get this stuff straightened out pretty quick. However we need to do it, we need to get this stuff corrected.”

Mason’s biggest catch came in the third quarter, when Flacco launched a bomb to Mason down the left sideline.  Mason was covered tight by rookie Jerraud Powers, but he managed to wrestle the football out of the Colt defender’s hands.

“Derrick made a great play on the ball for me,” said Flacco.  “That was a tough catch, and Derrick came down with it.”

Mason was key in the Ravens’ ability to march up and down the field.

He recorded eight first downs and converted two third downs to lead the team.

If they only came with touchdowns on the tail end of the drives.

“We put ourselves in a position to win the football game, and we don’t win it,” Mason said.  “And it’s the little things. In order to beat a 9-0 team, you have to do the little things. And damn it, we didn’t do it, so we came out with a loss.”
