Billy Cundiff is coming off a critical miss in the AFC championship, and the Ravens have brought in a rookie who prides himself on clutch kicks.

Let the battle begin.

Tucker had a tryout in Baltimore’s rookie camp and may have earned himself an extended stay.

He ended the first day of practice with a 55-yard field goal. On Sunday, Tucker made all four of his attempts from within 50 yards, then nearly hit on a pair of 60 yarders too.

“He gets really good lift on the ball, very accurate,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said. “He had a very good camp.”

Tucker is making sure to point out that clutch kicking is his strong suit.

For example, he likes watching YouTube videos of Adam Vinatieri, who hit two Super Bowl game-winners. He watches how he reacts to the situation surrounding such an important kick, watches him hit it time after time.

“It’s a good learning tool,” Tucker said.

Tucker made 40 of 48 career field goal attempts at Texas. His claim to fame was nailing a 40-yard field goal as time expired to beat Texas A&M in the possible final installment of the century-old rivalry.

“Shoot, that’s a moment everybody is looking for in sports,” he said. “Everybody wants their chance to hit a walk-off home run or hit the game-winner. To have that opportunity and then come through was a blessing.”

Tucker chose the Ravens over other rookie free agent offers from Dallas and Chicago. He had worked out privately before the draft for Special Teams Coach Jerry Rosburg, and liked Harbaugh’s background as a special teams coach.

But most of all, he was happy that the Ravens want to create a competition between Tucker and Cundiff, who went to the Pro Bowl in 2010 and signed a five-year contract the following offseason.

“I look forward to it, coming in and competing against a guy that’s had success in the league,” Tucker said. “It’ll be a challenge, but it will be fun.

“I’m hitting the ball just as well as I ever have. I feel I’ve had a pretty good camp.”
