After 14 years with the Pittsburgh Steelers – and maybe just as long as public enemy No. 1 around Baltimore – wide receiver Hines Ward has officially retired.

On his way out, Ward made sure to clear up any speculation.

A spoof website, BroCouncil.com, posted a story saying Ward signed a three-year deal with the Ravens after being cut by Pittsburgh earlier this month. A Pittsburgh television station fell for it, giving the false rumor traction.

Ward made light of the potential of signing with Baltimore during his emotional retirement press conference Tuesday.

“We know that won’t ever happen,” Ward said with a grin.

The history between Ward and the Ravens is well-documented.

He and safety Ed Reed long chirped at each other, and Reed made no bones about calling Ward a “dirty player.” Last year, Jarret Johnson decleated him and Ray Lewis knocked him out of the game in Pittsburgh.

Ward finished his career with 1,000 career receptions for 12,083 yards and 85 touchdowns. In 27 career games against the Ravens, he caught 108 passes for 1,320 yards and six touchdowns. He had better numbers against other AFC North foes Cincinnati and Cleveland.

He wasn’t much of a factor against Baltimore the past three years. In seven games, including the playoffs, he had 18 catches for 203 yards and one touchdown.

During a chat with fans this afternoon, Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith was asked for his thoughts about Ward’s retirement.

“[I don’t know] he was a great football player and everyone respects the way he plays,” Smith said.
