Terrell Suggs will be the face of Baltimore’s defense for several years to come.

Now the Ravens are working to lock up the franchise players on the offensive side, and the reigning Defensive Player of the Year is excited to know that the core of the team is in place to make another run at a Super Bowl.

“All of us are in it for the long haul, but I think our time is due,” Suggs said. “We’ve put in the work. We’ve sacrificed the blood, sweat and tears, and I think it’s time that we can achieve that glory.”

Two of the Ravens’ biggest offseason priorities are signing quarterback Joe Flacco and running back Ray Rice to contract extensions.

The Ravens applied the franchise tag to Rice on Friday, but are still hoping to work out a long-term deal before the start of training camp. Flacco still has another year left on his rookie contract, but the Ravens want to reach an extension with him before this season.

Baltimore is also hoping to bring back Pro Bowl left guard Ben Grubbs, who is an unrestricted free agent.

As the Ravens work through negotiations with those players, Suggs said that he keeps his distance because he knows what it’s like to go through the process of signing a big-time contract and the expectations that come with it. He signed a reported six-year, $63 million contract back in 2009.

“I know the business side of this thing because I was in it at one point,” he said. “Now it’s just more that I kind of sit back and I kind of trust Ozzie and let them do their jobs up there in the front office.”

The kind of money that Flacco and Rice will likely get can change some people, but Suggs has played with them since they came into the league and he doesn’t expect that the happen with them.

“That doesn’t happen to our kind of guys,” Suggs said. “I think [General Manager] Ozzie Newsome does a good job of bringing in the right kind of people into our building and organization. I don’t think we need to worry about any of that.”

With Rice and Flacco possibly getting those big deals and other key players returning on both sides of the ball, Suggs is feels the Ravens have the pieces in place to again compete for a championship.

“Most definitely,” he said. “Otherwise, what are we doing? Why are we wasting our time? We love playing with this team. We love our locker room. That is definitely the goal, to play and to win and that’s the plan.”
