Mayock ‘Unimpressed’ With Burfict

The Arizona State LB has been linked to the Ravens, but Mike Mayock would pass at No. 29.

A look at Arizona State middle linebacker Vontaze Burfict’s YouTube highlights has Ravens fans and draftniks drooling.

ESPN’s Todd McShay projected the high-intensity, vicious hitter coming to Baltimore at the No. 29 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, tabbing him as the heir-apparent to Ray Lewis. His colleague, Mel Kiper, did the same in his previous mock draft before changing his mind this week.

Don’t count the NFL Network’s Mike Mayock among those on the bandwagon.

Vontaze Burfict Highlights

On a media conference call Wednesday, Mayock said he recently watched a bunch of film on Burfict and he’s “not a fan at all.”

“I came away unimpressed,” the analyst said, adding that he doesn’t see Burfict going in the first round.

A knock on Burfict has been that his aggressive play can lead to his emotions getting the best of him.

In 2010, he was benched by Head Coach Dennis Erickson after head-butting Oregon State quarterback Ryan Katz. Later that year, back-to-back personal foul penalties, including one for arguing with referees, played a major part in a 17-13 loss to Stanford.

Mayock said some of the media attention put on the penalties is overblown. He tried to strip all of that away and simply judge Burfict by his play on the field.

“From my perspective, if he gets a chance at a blowup hit where he can just knock somebody into the next century, he’s going to take it and it’s going to look really good. That’s where he’s impressive,” Mayock said.

“However, the other major percentage of the time, his instincts aren’t good, he gets enveloped by big bodies, he runs around blocks. For a big, strong guy he’s nowhere near as good at the point of attack as I thought he would be.”

Burfict was named the 2009 Pac-10 Defensive Freshman of the Year and had a monster sophomore campaign. But his stats dropped his junior season in which he logged 69 tackles and five sacks, including three in a Week 1 beating of UC Davis.

“From my perspective, I don’t see first round at all,” Mayock said.
