For a few weeks in training camp, it was looking like rookie Jah Reid was going to be the Ravens’ starting right tackle.

However, after the signing of left tackle Bryant McKinnie, and resulting shift of Michael Oher to the right side, Reid has mostly been relegated to the bench. His gameday role has been as a blocker on extra point attempts.

That changed Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, as Reid saw his first offensive playing time of the season as an extra blocker in the team’s jumbo package.

“The whole week I was practicing and I was really looking forward to getting in on the field,” Reid said. “There were a little jitters, but I was really happy just to get on the field.”

The third-round pick made a difference.

Lined up to Oher’s right, the Ravens gained seven yards on third-and-2 on their first drive of the game. Rice cut back behind Oher and Reid to nearly break a long gain.

Then on the Ravens’ final drive of the first quarter, Reid again reported into the game on third-and-2 after running back Ricky Williams had just been stopped for no gain.

Baltimore ran around the right end toward Reid, and this time Williams busted up field for a 24-yard gain – the Ravens’ longest run of the day.

Reid was in for two plays and they went for a combined 31 yards.

It was more than just a move based on matchups or scheme. Asked what prompted the coaches to suddenly use Reid, Head Coach John Harbaugh said he’d been practicing well.

“He’s just a guy, we felt like, it’s time to get him on the field and start expanding what he does, and that’s a way to do it,” Harbaugh said. “So, we want to get our guys on the field as much as we can.”

The Ravens used a lot of the off-balanced and jumbo packages back in 2008 when they had swing tackle Adam Terry. They also liked to use it some when they had Chris Chester.

With Reid stepping up, it could be something the Ravens show more of going forward.

“I know my time will come,” Reid said. “I’ve just got to stay the course and keep working. The more they put me in, that’s great. The more experience the better. I’m just excited to get in there any way I can.”
