The Ravens have placed cornerback Domonique Foxworth on Injured Reserve.

After spending all of last year on the reserved list, Foxworth has been having complications getting his surgically-repaired knee back to 100 percent.

The Ravens made him inactive for last Sunday’s game in St. Louis after Foxworth was admittedly playing “conservatively” in the season’s first two games.

“The more I do, the worse it gets,” a dejected Foxworth said last Thursday. “It hurts, it sucks.”

Harbaugh said conversations about what to do with Foxworth heated up on Monday, and they spoke to him about how his knee was feeling. Harbaugh confirmed that Foxworth’s knee was regressing

“There was a chance he could be able to play at some point in time and help us, and we were holding out hope that was the case, but it was moving in the other direction for whatever reason,” Harbaugh said. “So we just didn’t feel like afford we could do that right now, especially with needing the linebacker.”

Foxworth, 28, was hoping to return to his 2009 form, when he finished the year with three interceptions in the final three regular-season games. He was the Ravens’ No. 1 cornerback that season.

He returned from his torn anterior cruciate ligament at the start of training camp, but later said he tried to do too much too soon and had a setback.

Now Foxworth will have time to fully recover. The cornerback is going into the final year of his contract in 2012, and Harbaugh was asked about his prospects for returning to the team.

“I’d say it’s all up in the air for everybody,” Harbaugh said. “I’m hoping to be here next year, too.”

Without Foxworth in the cornerback corps, the Ravens will now have Cary Williams, Lardarius Webb, Chris Carr, Chykie Brown and Danny Gorrer on the active roster. Harbaugh said the team would like to have one more healthy cornerback.

The Ravens instead re-signed linebacker Prescott Burgess, who will take Foxworth’s place on the active 53-man roster.

Burgess, who played in Baltimore since 2007, was part of the final preseason roster cuts. He led the Ravens in special teams tackles each of the past two seasons, posting 15 in 2010 and 34 in 2009.

Burgess could fill in for linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, who suffered a hamstring injury against the Rams. Ellerbe’s injury is not serious, but his availability for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets is unknown at this time.

“Anybody would feel good to have a job,” Burress said, adding he feels he can step in right away. “Why not? I’ve only been gone for three weeks. You could just say I had a bruised ankle or something like that.”
