Williams Makes Final Case To Make Team

Did the Maryland product do enough to be the next undrafted free agent to make the team?

LaQuan Williams raced down the field midway through the second quarter of the Ravens’ 21-7 win over the Atlanta Falcons to cover a punt, shooting past a blocker and pushing Dominique Franks out of bounds.

The play might seem rote, but it was his first special teams tackle of the preseason.

Perhaps more importantly, it marked a big step in his quest to go from undrafted free agent to the NFL.

“He missed a couple tackles last week, but he went down and made a couple plays,” said Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh. “That was good to see. That’s the growth of a young player.”

When asked about Williams last week, Harbaugh made a point of noting how Williams still had a long way to go as a special teamer.

People have pointed out his 38-yard punt return in Week 3 of the preseason that set up a game-winning drive against the Washington Redskins and anointed Williams the next undrafted free agent to make the active roster.

Williams reinforced that notion when he took a punt 33 yards up the left sideline – and nearly breaking it for a touchdown – in the first quarter.

“How about the punt return?” Harbaugh asked. “He had another punt return for us, so it was another good night for a young guy like that.”

But even the former University of Maryland special teams captain knew a couple of punt returns wouldn’t be enough and he needed to improve in other areas.

“I had struggled a bit at gunner, but after training at punt returner, I think I did a pretty good job at [gunner],” Williams said.

“I want to be that special teams guy, someone that can do it all.”

Williams has also shown that he can contribute in the passing game, hauling in four catches for 64 yards in the Ravens’ first three preseaosn contests.

“I think I’ve done well enough to stand out,” said Williams. “I just hope it’s enough to make the team.”
