Wide receiver Derrick Mason will reportedly make a decision on what team he’ll play for this season by this weekend.

His former teammates seem to be hoping it’s in Baltimore.

“Derrick’s a great wide receiver,” quarterback Joe Flacco said. “He can help this team out in my opinion. Yeah, I’d welcome him back immediately.”

Flacco cracked a smile.

“Derrick’s a great guy, a great locker room guy,” he said. “He can be a little bit of a diva sometimes, but it’s all good and fun with him for the most part.”

The Ravens were reportedly pursuing free-agent wideout Malcom Floyd, but he opted to sign with San Diego for two years. That leaves Baltimore with the question of who will be the No. 2 receiver behind Anquan Boldin.

Head Coach John Harbaugh said the team would be open to adding a wideout and Mason said in the days after being released that he would come back to Baltimore.

As it stands now, second-round rookie Torrey Smith could be in line to step up. There’s also rookie Tandon Doss and a host of other more experienced wideouts who have for the most part been reserves.

Boldin, who has been tutoring the youngsters, said he was in contact with Mason just a couple days ago.

“Me and Mason had a great rapport,” Boldin said. “I think he can help us out tremendously. Yeah, I’d love to have Mason back.”

While saying he believes Smith is coming along well, Flacco supported adding more experience. Flacco hasn’t talked with Mason, who is reportedly also considering the New York Jets or Tennessee Titans, since he was released.

“When we were heading into this offseason, we were a pretty veteran team,” Flacco said. “That was one of those things that we feel pretty confident about going into the lockout was the fact that we had a veteran team. Now we pretty quickly got pretty young.

“So anytime you get a guy that’s a veteran and played some games in the NFL, it can help your locker room.”
