The Ravens will have competitions at most positions during training camp, but punt returner is one that may already be decided.

Ravens Special Teams Coordinator Jerry Rosburg told reporters on Tuesday that cornerback Lardarius Webb is the front-runner when it comes to running back punts.

“Every year we try and get as many guys back there to catch the ball, and show us what they can do as we possibly can,” said Rosburg.¬† “This year is no different, but Lardarius is definitely our lead guy as far as punt returner at this point in time.”

Webb has momentum going for him.

After incumbent Tom Zbikowski got banged up with foot and back injuries midway through last season, Webb stepped up to assume the full-time punt returner duties.

While doing so, Webb took a strong hold on the job.

There was the three-game stretch between Weeks 13-15 when Webb logged seven punt returns and averaged  15.14 yards per attempt.

He also had that electrifying 56-yard touchdown return in the fourth quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs, a play that was called back from a holding call on receiver Marcus Smith.

“Lardarius Webb finished the season as our punt returner and he was a very explosive returner for us,” said Rosburg.¬† “If you recall when he took over, things changed including that dynamic return in the playoff game that he scored on.”

The Ravens currently have several other players with punt return experience, which certainly spices up the summer battle.

Draft picks Torrey Smith and Tandon Doss were successful returning punts in college, while Zbikowski and cornerback Chris Carr have professional experience at the position.

“Lardarius is taking our returns right now as our No. 1 guy, but we’re always looking for returners; that never changes,” said Rosburg.
