Running back Ray Rice came in, loud as ever, booming with glee as he shouted for every teammate he saw.

“Good to be back!” he yelled.

The sounds of football returned to the Ravens’ Owings Mills training facility Tuesday morning after a prolonged lockout cancelled much of the offseason activities.

More than 20 Ravens voluntarily reported before noon to get their physicals, undergo their conditioning tests, reconnect with teammates and start preparing for Wednesday’s beginning of training camp.

And for the most part, the players looked like they had never left – or were in even better shape than they were before.

“It’s a lot of emotions, but I’m relieved more than anything,” cornerback Domonique Foxworth said. “We’re back to work and we can all do what we’re comfortable doing.”

Foxworth said the players are ready to “shut down” the perception that they aren’t mature enough to prepare in the right way.

And judging by the shape of the players arriving, they’ve been putting in the work.

Nose tackle Terrence Cody looked considerably slimmer. Meanwhile, linebacker Tavares Gooden said he’s put on 20 to 30 pounds of muscle and feels he’s in the best shape since his junior year of college.

“I spent my whole offseason training in Miami – that’s it,” Gooden said. “I’m in great shape. I’m not afraid of no conditioning test. I’m going to go knock it out.”

Second-year defensive tackle Arthur Jones also noticeably added muscle. He said he still weighs about the same 320 pounds, but was eager to arrive in Owings Mills and get his body fat percentage tested.

“I’m excited to see,” Jones said. “I feel like I’m in great shape right now, but football shape is totally different from anything.”

Quarterback Tyrod Taylor was the first rookie to arrive, and it was his first time in the building. He was looking for the locker room.

He was later joined by rookie wideout Torrey Smith and offensive tackle Jah Reid. First-round cornerback Jimmy Smith and wide receiver Tandon Doss came later.

“It’s nice to be back and know you’re actually going to be playing football,” Torrey Smith said. “It feels like my first time, but I kind of know my way around. It just feels good to be back and see a lot of new faces.”

Second-year tackle Ramon Harewood was the first player to arrive, coming in shortly after 10 a.m.
