Oher Better LT Than Sherrod Will Ever Be

Mike Mayock urges caution taking a tackle with the Ravens’ 26th-overall pick.

Mississippi State offensive tackle Derrick Sherrod has been linked to the Ravens in several recent mock drafts, including Brian Baldinger’s latest at NFL.com and Wes Bunting’s on National Football Post.

But Mike Mayock of the NFL Network thinks the Ravens should think twice if they want to move Michael Oher to the right side and start Sherrod at left tackle.

“To be honest, I think Oher’s a better left tackle than Sherrod’s ever going to be,” Mayock said in a conference call with national media.

It’s no secret that tackle is a draft need for the Ravens, with Marshal Yanda playing out of position last year at right tackle and the uncertainty of Jared Gaither’s return.

At the No. 26 position, the Ravens could potentially land one of the top tackles at the end of the first round, a group that includes Sherrod, Wisconsin’s Gabe Carimi, Anthony Castonzo from Boston College and Colorado’s Nate Solder.

Mayock isn’t sure that any of those players is worth the 26th pick, however.

“They can still take a Carimi, but Carimi’s not a whole lot better ultimately than the guy they’ve got playing on the right side from Iowa now that kicks inside to guard,” Mayock said.  “So looking for an upgrade there is a difficult proposition.”

If the Ravens don’t take a tackle like Sherrod in the first round, following Mayock’s advice, don’t be surprised if they spend a second- or third-round pick on a tackle.

“There’s not your top-five, your Jake Long-, Joe Thomas-type guy out there,” Ravens Director of College Scouting Joe Hortiz said of the tackle class.  “But, the collective unit of them is similar to years past where there’s a good stack of players.  In the second round you’re going to get an opportunity to take a good one. In the third round [you will have a chance].

“I would say the depth is pretty solid.”
