Even if there is a lockout, you can expect Ravens players to practice on their own.
Cornerback Domonique Foxworth, who is especially antsy after missing the entire 2010 season due to a knee injury, drafted an offseason players-only practice sketch and emailed it to his teammates shortly after the Super Bowl.
After getting a “great response” he and his fellow defensive backs have a mid-March practice set in stone with an April meeting also penciled in.
“We’re going to do our best to be prepared for next season no matter what happens in other cities with other teams,” Foxworth said Tuesday. “That’s a clear way for us to get an edge.”
Foxworth, who is on the NFLPA executive committee, emphasized that the practices were in no way influenced by the Ravens’ coaching staff.
The cornerback’s ideal scenario would be to meet up with teammates once a month on weekends.
“Obviously, we’re not going to redesign the offense and defense,” Foxworth said. “But we’ll be able to see each other and keep each other accountable like, ‘You’re getting fat.’ [laughs] When we’re working out together you can look around and see what’s going on. It will build that camaraderie.”
On Monday, wide receiver Derrick Mason said he had spoken with safety Ed Reed about getting the team together during the offseason. He said he had also talked with quarterback Joe Flacco.
In short, Baltimore has veteran leadership who knows the importance of staying in shape because there’s no telling when a new CBA will be signed.
“We have a pretty veteran bunch of guys and are really committed to one another,” Foxworth said. “I’d be extremely surprised if anybody shows up out of shape or anything like that. We know how to prepare.”
