The Ravens welcomed back veteran fullback Jason McKie Thursday, less than a month after they waived him the day before their final playoff game.

The nine-year blocker, who was with Baltimore for five regular-season games and one playoff contest last season, gives the team another option in the backfield.

Starter Le’Ron McClain, who is a restricted free agent under the 2010 rules, could become unrestricted under a new collective bargaining agreement. He has said he wants to return to Baltimore, but is meeting with his agent about his options.

McKie, 30, signed with the Ravens in late November when McClain suffered a knee injury heading into the team’s Week 13 game against Pittsburgh. McKie never saw action in a game, but remained on the roster even after McClain returned to the field.

McKie was released when the Ravens moved offensive lineman Bryan Mattison to the active roster on Jan. 14, the day before the divisional showdown in Pittsburgh. Center Matt Birk was questionable with a swollen knee at the time and the Ravens were looking to add depth.

At 5-foot-11, 247 pounds, McKie is a force in the run game. He blocked for seven years in Chicago, including in Super Bowl XLI in 2007.

Unlike McClain, McKie doesn’t handle the ball much. His 11 carries in 2008 are a career-high. He recorded 25 receptions in 2006, but that far exceeded his career average of 7.5 per year.
