The Ravens promoted guard/center Bryan Mattison from the practice squad to the active roster today and waived backup fullback Jason McKie to make room.

The move will give the Ravens additional support behind veteran starting center Matt Birk, who is listed as questionable for Saturday’s divisional game in Pittsburgh with a knee injury.

Birk didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday and was limited Friday.

It’s Mattison’s second time on the active roster this season. The son of Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison was promoted on Nov. 20, then waived when Baltimore signed tight end Davon Drew to the active roster. Mattison rejoined the practice squad on Dec. 22.

He was active for two games, at Carolina and versus Tampa Bay. Mattison, a 6-foot-3, 272-pound Iowa product, has two years experience.

The Ravens currently have right guard Chris Chester listed as Birk’s backup on the depth chart. Tony Moll is listed as Chester’s backup at guard. If Birk can’t play, Baltimore could also opt to shift both Chester and right tackle Marshal Yanda and use Oniel Cousins at right tackle.

Whomever lines up at center will have to take on Pittsburgh’s massive nose tackle Casey Hampton, a five-time Pro Bowler.

McKie joined the Ravens before their Dec. 5 meeting against the Steelers when fullback Le’Ron McClain was rehabbing an ankle injury. McKie wasn’t activated in that game and didn’t suit-up for any of the Ravens’ five contests since.
