The Ravens are comfortable with holding only two quarterbacks on their active roster, regardless of recent events.
There was a cautionary tale last weekend with the Miami Dolphins getting down to their third signal-caller Sunday, a scary thought considering Joe Flacco and Marc Bulger are the only quarterbacks on the Ravens roster.
“We’re not going to react to what happens around the league,” said Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh. “If you do that, you’d be reacting… You’d be back and forth all the time. We’ve made a decision what way we want to go. If we were to lose both of our quarterbacks in a game, that would be a problem.
“But, we’ve made a decision to balance out the fact that that’s so highly unlikely – although it can happen – the fact that we’d rather have an extra player on the roster.”
After watching the Dolphins’ Chad Pennington – who left with a shoulder injury – and a beaten-up Chad Henne leave due to a hurt knee, third-stringer Tyler Thigpen entered the game.
Although Thigpen was solid, throwing for one touchdown in last week’s win over the Tennessee Titans, the scenario presents a precarious situation regarding their roster.
Should Flacco and Bulger get knocked out of a game, wideout Anquan Boldin would take over the quarterbacking duties.
Boldin was a former Mr. Football for the State of Florida, having completed 133 of 233 passes for 2,482 yards and 36 TDs as a senior in 2002.
“If that happens, we’ll probably go with Anquan Boldin and try to win a football game, and then make our way the next week, however we had to,” Harbaugh noted, contemplating the emergency scenario.
