Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata has had more stat sheet-stuffing Sundays this season than he did against the Dolphins, but he was more than due for an award.

Ngata received the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 9 after notching four tackles and one sack in the Ravens’ 26-10 win over Miami.

The five-year veteran now has five sacks on the season, a career-high after posting three in 2007. Ngata leads the Ravens in sacks this season and he’s third in tackles (44).

The 6-foot-4, 350-pounder has had his best days against top competition. He had 11 tackles and a sack in Pittsburgh and seven tackles and two sacks in New England.

Ngata was a big reason why the Ravens shut out the Dolphins in the second half of Sunday’s game. After Miami had success on the ground on its drive, Baltimore clamped down to hold the Dolphins to just 73 yards rushing.

“I think the guy’s playing fabulous right now, physical, outstanding movement, he’s getting pressure on the passer,” Dolphins Head Coach Tony Sparano told the Baltimore media before Sunday’s game.

“You got to know where he is all the time and that’s a little bit of a problem because at times he lines up in a couple of different spots. I think that he’s playing outstanding as far as I’m concerned.”
