In order to make room for safety Ed Reed and linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo on the active roster, the Ravens sent tackle Jared Gaither to Injured Reserve and released outside linebacker/defensive end Edgar Jones Saturday afternoon.

The Ravens were hoping to get their tackle back at some point this season, but Gaither’s thoracic disc injury has been a lingering issue for the 6-foot-9 tackle. He practiced just once since injuring his back during the opening week of training camp.

Jones was in his fourth season in Baltimore and had become a solid special teams figure, a role that Ayanbadejo, a three-time Pro Bowl special-teamer, will step back into.

An undrafted free agent out of Southeast Missouri State, Jones finished fourth on the team with a career-high 19 special teams tackles last season. This season, he had two special teams tackles and had yet to make a tackle on defense.

Jones was a jack-of-all-trades in Baltimore. He served as the team’s No. 3 tight end last year, briefly switched to fullback this offseason, then landed back at his college position as a pass-rushing defensive end/linebacker.

It hasn’t been announced whether Reed or Ayanbadejo will play Sunday, but Head Coach John Harbaugh said they both had good weeks of practice.

“We’re feeling pretty good about both those guys right now,” Harbaugh said.

“It’s a matter of how much they can go, and we definitely don’t want to have any setback. I think that’s the main thing. That’s the key word probably.”
