According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Ravens will place offensive tackle Jared Gaither on Injured Reserve to make room on their roster for safety Ed Reed.

Gaither has not practiced since a brief showing two weeks ago with a slight tear in the thoracic disc in his back. It was his first since the opening week of training camp, when he was carted off the field with back spasms.

The Ravens have made no official announcement regarding a roster move, and they have until 4 p.m. Saturday to do so if they want to activate Reed.

Reed went through a full week of practices to test out his surgically-repaired hip and responded well, according to Head Coach John Harbaugh. Harbaugh has said that the Ravens will be cautious with Reed’s return.

Meanwhile, Gaither’s back has been a puzzling issue. He saw multiple specialists and rehabilitated constantly, but could never make it back on the field in an extended capacity.

Gaither was the Ravens’ starting left tackle in 2009, but was moved to the right side and replaced by Michael Oher during the offseason.
