The Ravens got a brief scare when Todd Heap was leveled by New England Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather in the second quarter of their 23-20 overtime loss, but the eight-year veteran only missed five snaps before he returned to the game.

The illegal hit, which drew a 15-yard personal foul, will likely draw a hefty fine from the NFL league office.

“I was hurting for a little bit, but [it] felt good enough to come back in,” Heap said after the game.  “It just took me a little time to figure out if everything was fine, and I came back in.”

Heap was coming over the middle on second-and-7 from the Ravens’ 23-yard line when he leapt for a Joe Flacco pass.  The ball glanced off his hands as Meriweather launched into the 6-foot-5, 245-pound Heap, connecting on a helmet-to-helmet blow.

Heap lay on the turf for several minutes with Ravens trainers before walking off under his own power. The Ravens did not announce any injury for the Pro Bowler after the game.

“I really don’t have any thoughts about it now,” Heap noted.  “I didn’t see him coming or see what happened.  I’ll have thoughts about it after I see it.”

Heap said he thought the hit may have fired up his teammates, although a holding penalty on Michael Oher set the drive back and led to a Ravens punt.

“A lot of guys felt like it was one of those shots that shouldn’t be taken,” said Heap.  “I can’t really comment on it because I don’t know exactly how he hit me.”

As for Meriweather, he obviously suspects to feel a hit to his wallet.

“I’m not talking about that, I’m sorry,” said Meriweather in the Patriots’ locker room. “I’m not talking about it, period. Any other questions?”
