Ray Lewis has a ton of respect for Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward.

But as far as Ward’s infamous smile, the one that crawls under the skin of Ravens fans, Lewis has a special solution for erasing that.

“Hit him,” Lewis said. “That’s the way to knock the smile off anybody’s face on the football field.”

Lewis said whenever playing against Ward, he’s “looking for him.”

Ward, who is in his 13th season in Pittsburgh, has 100 receptions for 1,226 yards and six touchdowns in 23 career games against Baltimore. Those are his lowest numbers in each category versus an AFC North opponent.

Ward hasn’t scored a touchdown against the Ravens since 2004 and caught a combined seven passes for 84 yards against Baltimore last year.

Still, Lewis is impressed by the way Ward continues to play the game.

“Hines Ward is one of the true professionals,” Lewis said. “He plays the game with a smile most of the time – [ticks] most people off – but anytime you can play the game with that type of emotion and controlled intensity, then do it.

“That’s why he’s been around so long. He came from Georgia playing like that and he’s still playing like that now. You have to tip your hat off to a guy like that.”
