Troy Smith said he was initially surprised when informed that the Ravens would carry only two quarterbacks heading into 2010 campaign.
But after the news that he would be on the outside of that group settled, Smith recognized the reality of his situation.
With Joe Flacco leading the team under center, two-time Pro Bowler Marc Bulger backing him up and a bevy of deep position battles down the roster, having a third quarterback would be a luxury.
“I was a little shocked when I first heard about the decision,” Smith told BaltimoreRavens.com. “But I talk all the time about understanding what’s going on here. I had a couple of opportunities [in Baltimore], so now we’ll just see what happens.
“If there is an opening somewhere else, we’ll just take the bull by the horns at that time.”
Smith, a fifth-round draft pick (2007), is less than a week removed from his only start of the preseason, as he helmed the Ravens through all of their 27-21 loss to the St. Louis Rams last Thursday.
Smith completed 18 of 38 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns. Facing pressure all night, Smith also rushed seven times for a team-leading 56 yards and two touchdowns.
The former Heisman Trophy winner has shown through the years that he can play in the NFL.
“As a player, I know my integrity is still intact,” Smith said. “I was told that it was a numbers situation for the Ravens. I have nothing but great things to say about the organization and the people in this area.”
Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome pointed to the numbers regarding Smith’s release.
“The competition to make our team was very heated, and we decided to keep a position player rather than a third quarterback,” Newsome said in a statement issues by the team. ”We have a number of young guys who made our team who have tremendous upside, plus they can help us win this year.”
