A college football rivalry met at Ravens training camp Tuesday, as Maryland and Navy’s coaching staffs came to Westminster to discuss their upcoming game on Sept. 6 at M&T Bank Stadium.

“I think it’s huge – especially for us,” Maryland Head Coach Ralph Friedgen said of a rivalry. “I know Navy is a big rival with Army. But to have an in-state rival, I think it just helps the whole state.

“I think it just brings the whole state together and having it in Baltimore just accentuates that. … I think anybody that went last time will want to come back this year because they know it’s going to be a great show.”

The two teams last met in 2005 with the Terps pulling out a late 23-20 win at M&T Bank Stadium. This year’s game will mark the 21st meeting between the two teams, dating back to 1905.

Friedgen, who chatted with Baltimore General Manager Ozzie Newsome for much of practice, said he would like to make the intra-state meeting an annual tradition. Navy Head Coach Ken Niumatalolo echoed those sentiments.

“We need to play more,” Niumatalolo said. “We’ve got two great institutions that are so close together. There’s a history involved. Hopefully we can continue this series going on.”

Tickets can still be purchased on TicketMaster.
