The Ravens have an inside track if they want to make any rule changes going forward, as Head Coach John Harbaugh has been named to the subcommittee for the NFL Competition Committee.

Harbaugh will review proposals from around the league and make recommendations to the eight-man Competition Committee, which includes longtime member and Ravens General Manager and Executive Vice President Ozzie Newsome.

The Ravens’ head coach will also participate in meetings of the General Managers Advisory Committee.

Harbaugh accepted the honor in late May when it was offered by former NFL player, coach and broadcaster John Madden, who is the subcommittee’s chairman and a Special Advisor to the Commissioner.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently called Harbaugh to congratulate him on accepting the position.

“It’s an honor and responsibility to join the Competition Subcommittee chaired by Coach Madden,” Harbaugh said. “I have the utmost respect for Coach Madden and for his commitment to the game of football, as well as for Commissioner Goodell and his vigorous efforts to seek out and implement ideas in every area of our sport.

“Coach Madden and Commissioner Goodell share in that commitment to work in every way possible to improve and maintain the quality of football for everybody involved in the game; especially the fans. The opportunity to be a part of that work is appreciated greatly and I will take it very seriously.”

Harbaugh showed an interest in the rule changes this offseason. He attended the owners meetings in March and commented on the playoffs overtime rule change.

“Sometimes change is good and we’ll adjust to it,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll start studying the strategies and come up with plans for the new rule.  If we get to the playoffs and we get to overtime we’ll do whatever we have to do in overtime to win.”
