Don’t assume the Ravens will bring their offensive draft picks along slowly at the skill positions.

If things go as planned, tight ends Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta, and receiver David Reed will see action from scrimmage during the Monday night season opener against the New York Jets.

That trio has a long way to go – especially with training camp looming – but Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron sees them all playing key roles in special scenarios.

“We’re expecting contributions from them,” said Cameron.  ”You only have so many guys that are going to be active on gameday, and usually offensively it’s about 20-21 guys.  A big thing that we wanted to do is create depth at receiver and at tight end to give Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton and Todd Heap a play off here or there.

“It will keep them fresher on third down or in the scoring zone.  These rookies are going to do that, and they’re going to do it immediately.”

Dickson, a third-round selection, Pitta (fourth) and Reed (fifth) all impressed during organized team activities.

Dickson and Pitta both got time with the first- and second-teams, both with Heap and to give the two-time Pro Bowler a blow.  Reed showed promise with the backups, but was a
standout when he saw more opportunities during rookie camp.

Once the pads come on in late July, the Ravens will better understand how much they can use the draftees on offense.  At least for Dickson, Pitta and Reed, that expectation already exists.

“We’re going to put them in those situations because they’ve performed well since Day 1,” Cameron said.  ”We’ve got to find out what they can do to make sure they’re ready for Monday night.”
