While the Ravens may not have safety Ed Reed at the start of the 2010 season, they could still benefit from his tutoring.

Safety Tom Zbikowski has been closely watching Reed the past two seasons and, according to Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison, showed the spoils of those lessons during organized team activities this spring.

“Tom’s playing faster because he anticipates exactly what’s coming,” Mattison said.

“Now he’s got it. Now he can go from thinking about his technique to the tendencies of the team he’s playing. That’s what Ed’s always done such a great job of. Ed’s probably one of the greatest students there is in the game.”

Mattison noticed that Zbikowski would just nod immediately when asked about formations or coverages during offseason meetings. He already seemed to know it, Mattison said.

Zbikowski’s knowledge should help him in a competition with recent addition Ken Hamlin. Zbikowski also took nearly all of the offseason snaps with Reed out during OTAs.

“It’s been a blessing spending three years learning from Ed Reed since I got to the NFL,” Zbikowski said last week. “It’s going to be a good competition.”
