While Terrell Suggs hasn’t been with the team during voluntary OTAs, Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison said he has kept in touch with his outside linebacker.

And those conversations have further strengthened Mattison’s faith that Suggs is attempting to return to his Pro Bowl form.

“We trust him,” Mattison said. “He wants to be in the greatest shape he’s ever been in and make the plays he’s made before. We know he wants to come back and have the best year he ever had.”

Despite the criticism Suggs has received, Mattison attests that Suggs was a dominant force against the run last year.

That said, Mattison would like more sacks after Suggs notched a career-low 4 in 2009. The Ravens ranked 18th in the NFL last season with 32 sacks.

“I have to trust whole-heartedly that Terrell Suggs is going to come back and take all the good things he did on the run last year and turn it into the pass also,” Mattison said.

In early May, Suggs said he is trying to slim down to 260 pounds and was using mixed martial arts training to improve his hands. Suggs also said he was looking for the “Dali Lama of trainers.”

Mattison and the other Ravens defensive coaches – including new Outside Linebackers Coach Ted Monachino – specifically emphasized pass rush technique this offseason.

“I would have loved to have Terrell here,” Mattison said. “I really believe that with what we’re teaching on pass rush he would gain from that.

“But I’ve got to have confidence that he’s going to come back and prove to everybody that he is as good as he is.”
