The Ravens trimmed their roster by one on Tuesday with the release of outside linebacker Willie VanDeSteeg.

A former rookie free agent who joined the team in 2009, VanDeSteeg spent all of last season on the Ravens’ practice squad.

The Minnesota Golden Gopher came out of college as a defensive end, but was making the transition to linebacker at the professional level, even switching from No. 68 as a rookie to the more linebacker-friendly No. 94 this year.

Still, VanDeSteeg, 6-foot-4, 256 pounds, faced an uphill battle on a depth chart full of talent at the position, especially after the Ravens drafted Sergio Kindle in the second round.

The Ravens now move forward with Terrell Suggs, Jarret Johnson, Antwan Barnes, Edgar Jones, Prescott Burgess and undrafted free agent Albert McClellan as their OLBs.
