Only two red-shirted quarterbacks were throwing the football at the Ravens’ passing camp this week, as Troy Smith rested in Cleveland after getting his tonsils removed.

Head Coach John Harbaugh estimated it would be two weeks before Smith can return to the field.

“He’s eating a bowl of ice cream as we speak, I would guess,” said Harbaugh with a laugh after Tuesday’s Organized Team Activity.

It was not Smith’s first tonsil battle.

Two years ago, during the 2008 preseason, Smith suffered a blood clot in his neck from a tonsil infection, which led to a lung infection. Smith lost an estimated 20 pounds and was inactive for the first five games of the season, while Joe Flacco established himself as the Ravens’ starter.

“I don’t know if it’s related exactly [to his previous throat issues], but it probably is because he’s had some strep throat issues,” Harbaugh said.

Smith was in the news during the offseason because his former agent, Ralph Cindrich, publicly lobbied for a trade of the Heisman Trophy winner. Smith has since switched representation (Neil Cornrich) and expressed his satisfaction with serving as a reliable backup, despite a desire to start one day.

“My time will come,” Smith told reporters two weeks ago, during the Ravens’ final day of minicamp. “I love it here. There’s two things you can’t get back in this situation and that’s your relationship you form with the guys and the bond can be unbreakable. These guys are special to me and we’re going to do great things.”
