On the same day the Ravens signed a defensive lineman to help fill his void, the Ravens said their goodbyes to defensive end Dwan Edwards.

Edwards strolled into the Ravens’ cafeteria wearing a big smile and a brand new Buffalo Bills T-shirt Monday. Don’t worry, the defensive end who signed with the Bills early last week caught some flak from his former teammates and coaches.

“What is this?” offensive line coach John Matsko said with a laugh, pointing to Edwards’ T-shirt.

“You got to,” Edwards said, chuckling in turn.

The Ravens players hollered when they first saw Edwards, who was in Owings Mills to clean out his locker and bid farewell. Edwards helped himself to some lunch and chatted with Troy Smith, Le’Ron McClain, Trevor Pryce and Derrick Mason among others.

“They all love it, they think it’s funny,” Edwards said of the T-shirt.

All joking aside, it was a “bittersweet moment” for Edwards. He was drafted by the Ravens in 2004, spent six years in Baltimore and was hoping to return after a 2009 campaign in which he started nine games and made 47 tackles.

“I definitely thought it would be a great place to come back to,” Edwards said. “I’ve been here my whole career and you have thoughts of finishing your career with the same team. It definitely would have been great, but I understand it’s a business.”

The Ravens will get a chance at redemption for Edwards’ T-shirt flaunting as Baltimore hosts Buffalo some time during the 2010 season. Edwards jokingly asked Matsko to take it easy on him in the scouting report. Matsko replied by saying he would turn Ben Grubbs loose on him.

“It will be fun to come back and play against some of those guys,” Edwards said. “It will be one that I’ll have circled on my calendar.”
