Justin Bannan’s deal with the Denver Broncos doesn’t affect the Baltimore Ravens’ ability to sign unrestricted free agents, according to Ravens Vice President of Football Administration Pat Moriarty.

Bannan’s deal falls below the $3.862 million threshold the Ravens can spend on the first-year salary on any unrestricted free agents, and thus doesn’t give Baltimore any more free agency leeway.

Had Bannan’s first-year salary surpassed $3.862 million, then the Ravens would be free to sign an unrestricted free agent with an equal or lesser first-year salary.

As a reminder, the Ravens are entitled to re-sign any of their own unrestricted free agents – such as wide receiver Derrick Mason or defensive end Dwan Edwards – for as much as they want.

Also, the Anquan Boldin trade and contract extension did not apply to the free agency restrictions. Baltimore is still allowed to sign one unrestricted free agent for a first-year salary of $5.807 million or more. That doesn’t mean they will, but they can.
