The Ravens officially added Ted Monachino to coach their outside linebackers.

Monachino spent the last four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, heading their defensive line since 2008. He was the Jaguars’ assistant defensive line coach from 2006-07.

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh cited a solid resume, positive referrals and a stellar interview as reasons for bringing Monachino on staff.

“Ted comes highly recommended from every person we spoke with, and he backed that up while interviewing with us,” Harbaugh noted. “He brings with him an impressive wealth of knowledge, and an intense passion for the game. Ted will work with our outside linebackers under Dean Pees, and will have a tremendous impact on our defense, primarily through the pass rush. We are fortunate to add a coach of his level to our team.”

The move marks a reunion between Monachino and Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs. The two teamed up at Arizona State, where Monachino coached the Sun Devils’ defensive line from 2000-05 and Suggs became one of college football’s most-dominant defenders.

Under Monachino’s leadership, the Ravens’ former first-round draft pick earned numerous national awards, including the Bronco Nagurski Award for the nation’s best defensive player, and shattered school, conference and NCAA single-season records with 24 sacks in 2002.

“I am really looking forward to the opportunity to work with my former college coach,” said Suggs. “Coach Monachino challenged me to be the best I could be every practice, every game and every day. He is a perfectionist who will get the best out of all of us. I am really excited to work with him again.”

Monachino, 43, started his coaching career in 1990 with Hannibal High school in Missouri, moving to Pacific High School before joining the collegiate ranks with Texas Christian in 1996. He later served stints with James Madison, Southwest Missouri State and Boise State.

Monachino takes a position formerly held by Mike Pettine, who left to become the New York Jets’ defensive coordinator last offseason. The Ravens did not fill that spot, instead moving forward with Vic Fangio as their only linebackers coach in 2009.

Pees, the New England Patriots’ former defensive coordinator, joined the Ravens as linebackers coach last month, replacing Fangio, who was recently named Stanford’s defensive coordinator.

Being an outside linebackers coach means that Monachino will focus on the Ravens’ hybrid edge rushers. Last year, coordinator Greg Mattison took a large part of that role, working individually with Suggs, Paul Kruger and William VanDeSteeg in practice.
